Google – “Lili Elbe”
I made a Google Doodle! 😍 I’ve created this portrait in collaboration with Google for their Google Doodle series (https://www.google.com/doodles/lili-elbes-140th-birthday) ✨
This is a portrait of Lili Elbe, a former Danish painter, to celebrate her 140th birthday. She is considered one of the most significant painters of her time as well as an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ community as one of the first recipients of gender affirmation surgery. On this day in 1882, Lili Elbe was born in Vejle, Denmark.
Being invited to create this portrait of Lili Elbe meant a lot to me and I'm very happy that I was able to give Lili the positive representation she deserved.
Oftentimes, when trans individuals are being portrayed by popular media, the struggles and stigma around trans experiences are being emphasized. Being able to portray Lili felt like such a beautiful opportunity to honour her and put her in the spotlight in a way that celebrates her identity; in a way that she deserves to be seen.
For this portrait I drew inspiration from the art deco era Lili lived in. I did research about Lili's life, and in which ways art and design influenced the world around her. Lili's wife Gerda was a painter herself. At a certain point during their relationship she started to paint Lili in women’s clothes, which helped Lili realise that she was a trans woman. In this portrait I’m showing Lili, posing for her loving wife Gerda.
With this portrait I want to show the beauty, resilience and strength that makes trans individuals so wonderful. It is so important that trans individuals are being uplifted and positively represented in mainstream media. We need representation of our deep love, our sense of community, our tenderness, our strength. Our resilience, our empathy, our growth. We need to be able to tell our own stories with our own voices. To be able to create this portrait of Lili felt like a wonderful and meaningful way of honouring her ✨

💕 It’s Aimee! 💕 I created this watercolour portrait of Aimee in collaboration with @netflix for the new season of @sexeducation as part of our collab with @the.vulva.gallery✨

Bloomsbury – Book cover “Can’t Take That Away”
I had the honour to illustrate the book cover of @stevensalvatore's debut novel Can't Take That Away, published by @bloomsburyya ✨ This was such a dream job, being able to illustrate a main character that felt so close to me (they even have ginger hair). Get ready for a sweet coming of age (and gender) story of this adorable high school queer diva called Carey Parker 🌈💜✨🎤
Adobe – Pride 2019
I created this illustration for @adobedesign, part of a series of illustrations that visualise each letter of the LGBTQIA spectrum. This is the letter T, which represents the trans community 🏳️⚧️
Accompanying text: “For me, Pride is about freedom. About breaking boundaries and questioning the norm, about showing true diversity, to celebrate who we are as well as mourn for the violence and losses our community suffers. It's about celebrating our numerous ways of expression and the diversity they originate from 💫
It is vital to represent those who usually aren't allowed to be themselves in normal everyday life - being shamed, bullied or even killed for who they are, how they present or identify or simply for wanting to be treated equally.
Representation of our community in popular media and art is therefore essential. Representation is a big part of education and normalising diversity. Our community is diverse, so representation should also be honest and diverse; not only seen from one “ideal” perspective. Themes such as mental health, sexuality and non-sexuality, relationship diversity, drag or genderless clothing, disabilities, gender identities, body variations and ages should all be represented and normalised.
There’s a lot of power in seeing yourself represented (in popular media); recognising yourself in someone else’s story, and thinking: ‘Hey, that’s me!’. It can make the change between thinking you’re an outsider, and actually realising that you’re ‘normal’; that you belong. Let's keep continue our work to making this world an inclusive place 💫”
